Inspection of Kikuyu Water and Sewerage Project

INSPECTION OF KIKUYU WATER AND SEWERAGE PROJECT

11th September 2020 – Kiambu County the Cabinet Secretary Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Sicily Kariuki (Mrs.) inspected ongoing construction of Kikuyu Water and Sewerage Project under the Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation Programme funded by African Development Bank and Government of Kenya. The main objective of the program is to improve the access, quality, availability and sustainability of water supply and wastewater management services in Kikuyu Town, Kidfarmaco, Thogoto, Kamangu, institutions in Kikuyu and Ondiri areas with a view to catalyzing commercial activities, driving economic growth, employment creation, improving quality of life of the people and building resilience against climate variability and change.

The project commenced on November 2018 and is scheduled to be completed by May 2021. The project which is being implemented by Athi Water Works Development Agency at a cost of Kshs 635 million involves construction of 50 km of trunk and reticulation sewers, construction of 3 ablution blocks, construction of 6 boreholes and laying of 26 km of water distribution network. Once complete the project will achieve 450 household connections and benefit 50,000 residents. So far, 16.2km sewers and 3km of water pipelines have been laid.

The CS also inspected Ondiri Water Supply Project which consists of drilling and equipping of 4 boreholes at Ondiri Wellfield yielding combined 130,000 litres per hour, construction of 4 water tanks and laying of 4km water pipelines and connection to distribution network. The project  which will benefit over 20,000 residents of Kidfarmaco Island and Gichuru is expected to be completed in October 2020.
