Athi Water Works Development Agency (AWWDA) is one of the nine (9) Water Works Development Agencies (WWDA) established under the Ministry of Water, Sanitation & Irrigation. It was established under the Water Act 2016 vide Legal Notice No. 28 of 26th April 2019.
The Agency is responsible for the development, maintenance and management of water and sewerage infrastructure in the counties of Nairobi, Kiambu and Muranga Counties covering 5,800.4Km2 with a total population of 9,320,287 people. Currently, the Agency has a bulk water production capacity of 664,337m3/day and a wastewater treatment capacity of 210,500 m3/day.

The Agency is mandated to undertake the following services in line with the Water Act 2016
Development, Maintenance and Management of National Public Waterworks
Operate the waterworks and provide water services as a WSP until asset handover
Provide reserve capacity for purposes of providing water services
provide technical services and capacity building to County Governments and water services providers in our area of jurisdiction
provide to the Cabinet Secretary technical support in the discharge of his or her functions
Development, Maintenance and Management of National Public Waterworks
Increase access to water to 85% from the current 76% by 2027
By 2027, achieve 60% access to sewered sanitation coverage in our area of jurisdiction
Strengthen AWWDA institutional capacity for enhanced productivity
Adopt research, innovation and development that spurs innovative technologies for water and sanitation service interventions
Promote water conservation, protect water sources, and implement sustainable wastewater management practices.
Identify and operationalize Environmental and Social Sustainability Measures
Pursue innovative resource mobilization strategies to raise KES 209 billion by 2027
AWWDA operates under a robust governance framework ensuring accountability, transparency, and effective service delivery.
The Agency is governed by a Board of Directors appointed by the Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation. The Board provides strategic direction, policy oversight, and ensures compliance with statutory requirements.
Our experienced management team is responsible for day-to-day operations, implementing Board decisions, and ensuring efficient service delivery to all customers.
AWWDA operates under the regulatory oversight of the Water Services Regulatory Board (WASREB), ensuring compliance with service standards and consumer protection guidelines.
