On Monday 1st August 2022, His Excellency President Uhuru Kenyatta officially commissioned the Karimenu II Dam Water Supply Project located in Gatundu North, Kiambu County. The project is set to benefit more than 1.1 million residents of Gatundu, Ruiru, Juja, and parts of Nairobi with clean water supply. It consists of a 59m high dam across Karimenu River, 73 Million liters per day Water Treatment Plant, 55km of water transmission pipelines, and 2 No. water storage tanks in Ruiru and Juja. Construction works began in May 2019 and were substantially completed by May 2022. So far, the reservoir is 42% full translating to 11 billion liters of water, and is expected to be 100% full by November 2022 during the rainy period. The host community has also benefitted from the project through a raft of initiatives to improve the quality of life and education for the locals. A new school has been constructed in Karimenu with a capacity to hold more than 800 pupils and 22 classrooms with associated facilities. Other initiatives for the local community include; the construction of a 90km water distribution network to supply water to the community around the Karimenu II Dam Area of Kariua, Kanyoni and Gituamba areas, improved the Kanyoni to Kiriko Church Road to bituminous surfacing The agency has also drilled a borehole to serve Kiriko Girls Secondary School, Kiriko Primary School, Kiriko Catholic Church, and Kiriko Special Needs School, and developed a skills transfer program with more than 1,200 people benefitting. The project has also created employment opportunities for over 2000 people.
