Kigoro Water Treatment Plant

The Kigoro Water Treatment Plant is a Ministry of Water project under Athi Water Services Board. The project is capable of treating 142,500 cubic metres of water per day intended for Nairobi Residents. Located in Murang’a County, Barasa Ongeti a Quantity Surveyor and Measurements Engineer for this project explains that the project is almost complete awaiting the arrival of water. He speaks of how employment for locals has been a major impact with 80% of the employees coming from the local areas and over 20 local sub-contractors and suppliers for material engaged in the project.15% of these employees were female considering that construction has been viewed upon as gender imbalanced.

Project Characteristics

The initial capacity of the plant is 142,500 m3/day, with the possibility of extending it to 285,000 m²/day.
The water treatment process comprises the following stages:

  • Flocculation
  • Coagulation
  • Settling
  • Filtration
  • pH adjustment and final disinfection

The treated water is then stored in a 70,000 m3 reservoir.
