Monday 16th November 2020. The Principal Secretary Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation visited the new headquarters of Athi Water Works Development Agency and thereafter embarked on an inspection tour of Karimenu II Dam Water Supply Project in Gatundu North, Kiambu County.
He inspected the newly constructed Athi Water Plaza located along Muthaiga North Road, off Kiambu Road which will be AWWDA’s new home in its strive to ensure progressive realisation of the right to water and basic sanitation. AWWDA recently moved from Africa Re Centre, Upperhill to Athi Water Plaza in a move to provide a more conducive and vibrant environment for delivery of our lofty ambitions and commitment to the public.
The PS then proceeded to Karimenu II Dam Water Supply project which entails; a dam, water treatment plant of capacity 70 Million litres per day, 67 km of raw and treated water transmission pipeline and two concrete water storage tanks in Ruiru and Juja each with a capacity of 23.5 Million litres and 3 million litres respectively. Currently the project has achieved three milestones including tunnel breakthrough, completion of tunnel secondary lining and river diversion. Today marked the commencement of dam foundation works which is another key milestone for the project which is now 23% complete.
