Tackling the Water Menace

Resident of Nairobi are expected to reap benefits of the Northern Collector Tunnel (NCT1) as it is expected to be complete by December 2020. The tunnel will boost existing water supply to Nairobi by 140 million litres per day.

The NCT 1 is under the 4th Nairobi Water Supply project which is set to provide reprieve for residents of Nairobi and its environs up-to the year 2025. The project consists of Kigoro Water Treatment Plant, Raw and Treated Water Transmission Pipelines. Athi Water Works Development Agency is also modifying water distribution networks for Nairobi through laying of water transmission mains to significantly improve distribution for under served areas.

The Cabinet Secretary Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Hon. Sicily Kariuki (Mrs) E.G.H while inspecting ongoing works on NCT 1 in Muranga County emphasized the need to fast track efforts to complete the project within the set timelines while also adhering to Ministry of Health guidelines. She was accompanied by Chief Administrative Secretary Dr. Andrew Tuimur, Athi Water Works Chairman Hon. Eng. John Kiragu Chege, C.E.O Eng. Michael M. Thuita, C.E.O National Irrigation Authority Mr. Gitonga Mugambi, Director Peter Kihungi and other senior officials.
